MOMI’s Dazzling Debut: MOMI001

Sydney duo MOMI deliver an exhilarating debut with MOMI001, a record that instantly transports listeners into an extraterrestrial soundscape of swirling atmospheres and vibrant textures. From the moment it begins, the album feels like being pulled into a sonic wormhole, where genres blur and time seems to stretch. MOMI blends indie, psych, pop, and shoegaze effortlessly, creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and thrillingly fresh.

Tracks like “Fake Love,” are laced with a wistful, nostalgic charm, with its infectious chorus calling back to the shimmering indie-pop of the mid-2000s. By the time you’ve moved through “Spring In Reverse” and “Fake Love,” you might think you have MOMI’s sound figured out.  But then they throw you straight into an Studio-54 party with “My Name Is Nobody,” an upbeat, disco-infused track that shifts the album into a dance-floor-ready groove.

“Goldmine” shimmers with psychedelic allure, pulling you deeper into MOMI’s kaleidoscopic sound. But the standout moment for me comes with “Cellophane,” a collaboration with dream-pop sensation Hatchie. This track brims with irresistible groove and hazy melodies, the kind of song that lingers in your mind long after it’s over.

“Timelines,” while not the final track, feels like the emotional conclusion of the album, with the kind of bittersweet vibe you’d expect at the end of a coming-of-age film. the perfect penultimate track.  Then, MOMI001 winds down with “From The West To The East,” a slow, meditative closer that gently brings you back to Earth. It’s the perfect comedown after the listening experience that is  MOMI’s fantastical sonic universe.

With MOMI001, MOMI have crafted a dazzling debut that englightens listeners into their unique, genre-bending world. It’s a record that’s both nostalgic and progressive, dreamy yet grounded. MOMI have crafted an album that immerses you into the MOMIverse, a universe that that you won’t want to leave anytime soon.
